We had a nice Labor Day Visit to Maryland to experience the special wonders of the state known as the Old Line State with my sister Rachel and her husband, Dennis. We were immersed into the 100% culture of Maryland and Austria during those 96 hours. After a lovely and rainy day on Friday watching the country's reaction to Vice-Presidential Nominee Sarah Palin we took off for the Maryland State Fair on Saturday. It was quite a blast. Andrew and David met one of the tiniest women in the world at the West Indian Cultural Exhibit named Gloria Rodin. They are still talking about their lilliputian lady friend. We went on lots of rides and took in the horse races. Uncle Dennis and Mark brought 20 beers into the fair in their cooler and managed on a hot day to polish them all off. Then it was back home to the catered wonders of 3 dozen Maryland blue crabs seasoned with Old Bay and all the accompaniments. Mark and Andrew attacked the crabs with gusto and were converted into big fans of the crabby, cooked crustaceans.
The next day found us at a neighbor's pool party with even more Maryland crabs which were cooked onsite by a self proclaimed "Eastern Shore Hillbilly" of Maryland. We returned home on Monday, September 1st to get ready for the first day of school.
September 2nd dawned as a perfect day - it was also our 14th wedding anniversary. Andrew and David are old pros now at the routine of a school morning but it was still hard to believe that 5th and 2nd grade were upon us. The nights are becoming cooler which portends fall. Fall is one of our favorite seasons but we are all sadly bidding the Summer of '08 goodbye. The fennel harvest which William is holding will soon turn to winter squash and storage onions.

So happy to see a new post! I was missing you.
The foot in the picture with Caroline is lovely.
One of Dennis & Rachel's neighbors is a professional foot model and she kindly jumped in for the photo.
